Lionel Messi has been known to change his mind from time to time, and he is at it once again. Despite announcing his retirement from international play at the end of August, the consensus greatest futbol player of all-time will represent Argentina in a friendly match against West African nation Benin on Oct. 6, per The Athletic’s Colin Millar. This exhibition will be viewed as his “Last Dance” with La Albiceleste and take place in Buenos Aires.

Emotions will flood the country, as legions of fans prepare to watch Messi compete in an Argentina uniform one final time (maybe). The marvelous forward’s presence will obviously raise ticket prices by a significant amount and should hopefully generate revenue around the area. Aside from the financial gains that are sure to be had, it only feels right for Messi to have this “Last Dance” in his home country.
The 39-year-old is mourning the loss of his father and longtime manager/agent, Jorge Messi, who passed away on Aug. 8 due to a lengthy illness. Playing in the capital city could be incredibly healing for him. He will also get to end his incredible Argentinian run on a high note.

Lionel Messi did his best to lead La Albiceleste to a second straight victory in the World Cup final, but he was powerless versus an instantly legendary Spanish defense. Although Benin will do everything possible to avoid being a jobber in No. 10’s farewell, Messi should have multiple opportunities to increase his international goal total (currently stands at 125).

FIFA will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup in 2030 and is scheduling a match in Argentina, so it is fair to wonder if a nearly 43-year-old Messi will want to participate in the festivities. For now, though, he will say goodbye to the team that will probably most define his unparalleled career.
