The Liberal party won all three byelections held in Canada on Monday

Federal Liberal candidate Braeden Caley has won the byelection in the riding of North Vancouver-Capilano on Monday night.

As of 10:30 p.m., Caley had secured 58.5 per cent of the vote from 92 per cent of votes counted. Conservative candidate Stephen Curran won 28.7 per cent of the vote, followed by the Green party’s Shelley Luce with nine per cent and the NDP’s Stephen Tweedale with 3.4 per cent.

The byelection was caused by the departure of former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson so he could take the post of Canada’s ambassador to the European Union.

“It’s a good night for the Liberals and a bad one for the Conservatives, who have seen all their gains from 2021 to 2025 in the riding wiped out and are on track for less than 30 per cent of the vote,” said political analyst Hugh Chan.

“What was a sleepy byelection campaign was jolted to life by the dramatic collapse of trade talks between Canada and the United States. This election may be a good representation of Carney’s evolving Liberal coalition eating into the Tory vote share nationwide.”

Chan said the results could also show that the federal Greens were recovering from a bad showing in the 2025 federal election.

North Vancouver-Capilano includes the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver and a small part of the eastern waterfront edge of West Vancouver.

Created in 1998, the riding has been Liberal since 2015. Between 2008 and 2015, it was held by Conservative Andrew Saxton and, before that, by Liberal Don Bell from 2004 to 2008. Between 1993 and 2004, the seat was held by Ted White under the Reform, Alliance and Conservative banners.

This was one of three federal byelections held in Canada on Monday. The others were the Liberal stronghold of Beaches-East York in Ontario and the Conservative stronghold of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec.

The federal Liberals won both those seats on Monday.

Going into the byelections, the Liberals held 170 seats in Parliament, the Conservatives, 139, and other opposition parties have a combined 27. There are seven vacancies in the 343-seat house.
