In my opinion, Canadians, for the most part, are not holding the American people responsible for the chaos created by their government. The Donald Trump administration is squarely in those crosshairs. However, that could change dramatically if there is any show of overall support for the GOP agenda in the November midterms. That will be on the American public — not the government. Indeed, the world is watching how this plays out as voters are now on trial while deciding if this is the America they really want. The aftermath of the election will be less about how Americans rated their government and more about how the world in general, and Canadians in particular, judge Americans. The consequences are significant.

B.C.’s film industry deserves support

Once again reading over the article by Dan Fumano and Dana Gee, I’m wishing I could vote in Vancouver’s civic election. However, as an octogenarian and a long-time Burnaby resident, I can’t. I have a son working in the film industry and hope whoever is elected will support this industry now targeted by U.S. President Donald Trump. So much of our heritage is disappearing.

I cried reading the inimitable Pete Martin’s column entitled “The things she does.” I lost my husband of almost 30 years ago in July and this made me think of all the small, sweet things I loved about him. Seeing this level of appreciation for a longtime partner who is still around was incredibly touching. Bravo.

While I working as an articling student in a law office in 1986, one day a lawyer came rushing to my desk with excitement. He was holding an old legal document just received from the land titles office which contained a paragraph prohibiting the sale of the land, which I believe was in Shaughnessy, to Chinese people. Such practice was no longer in effect, but I was confronted with a prejudicial past. It was more powerful and real than reading about such practices in a history book. The encounter was brief, yet I can still recall the moment vividly to this day.

I would also like to end this on a positive note. I came to this country as an international student in 1970. I must admit that the past 56 years in Canada have both been fulfilling, and without prejudice (pun intended).

Time to end e-scooter pilot project

For how much longer are we going to have to endure the scourge of e-scooters in our municipalities? They are a complete menace and danger to all — not just the poor unsuspecting public trying to navigate our ever-challenging streets, but to the users themselves.

The hospital statistics speak for themselves: the severe injuries (even deaths) resulting from e-scooter use have skyrocketed since this pilot project was introduced. The reasons are multiple, but the end result is the same — vast expenses being shouldered by our medical system, which is already in dire straits and teetering on the brink of collapse. And these injuries are frequently severe, resulting in long hospital stays, permanent disability, and the lives of all those involved changed forever.

A day doesn’t go by without me witnessing yet another e-scooter infraction, usually several. There is clearly no enforcement of the rules (I have never seen a rider stopped by police) and, besides, the police are far too busy with more essential duties.

When on earth is this pilot project supposed to end? How many more tragedies do we have to witness before the powers that be wake up to the fact this has been an utter failure? It’s a trial that has long exceeded its “best before” date. It’s time for the ejector button to be pressed on this particular pilot’s seat.
