Watch: ‘Cocktail Wars’ Hosts Joey Fatone and Lance Bass Reveal Their Mouthwatering Hangover Cures
Lance Bass is gonna be real about his paycheck.
The Cocktail Wars host revealed that he and his fellow *NSYNC bandmates just got paid a tiny bit during their years with the band, especially when they first started off together in Europe before crossing over into the American market.
“We had a per diem: $35 a day,” Bass revealed on The Zach Sang Show Oct. 8. “Our first check was a $10,000 check after years of No. 1 albums, sellout tours. I don’t know how many millions they made off of merchandise because merchandise was insane.”
“And then they finally gave us a check for $10,000,” he recalled. “You’re like, ‘Oh, thanks.’ We should be grateful for that, been working for free for two, three years now.”
The 47-year-old—who was part of *NSYNC with JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, ChrisKirkpatrick and JustinTimberlake from 1995 until the group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2002—also shared that the band doesn’t receive a ton of money from their songs these days.
“You get residuals, for sure, but it’s not much,” Bass said. “It’s so weird how people think I’m so filthy rich from *NSYNC. No. Not at all. I did well after *NSYNC and I’m very proud of everything I did after that, but I didn’t make money with *NSYNC hardly at all.”
Of course, there were those who allegedlydid make a ton of money off the band, including their record label and their former manager the late Lou Pearlman, who in 2008 was sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges of conspiracy, money laundering and making false statements during a bankruptcy proceeding.
“One of the biggest scam artists of all time,” Bass noted of Pearlman, “made a lot.”
Bass also admitted that he did “at one time” carry a lot of resentment towards Pearlman and the record label, especially because it felt like no one was there to protect *NSYNC.
“I was mad at the adults in the room,” he shared. “The adults in the room saying, ‘You’re just a kid, you’re fine. Dance, land on your knees. You’re young, you don’t need to sleep, you’re a kid.’”
“Well, who cares if you’re young?” he questioned. “You still need to make a living and set yourself up for the future ‘cause most of these cases, it’s a finite time of being able to do something like that, and no one set us up for life after that. We had to do it all ourselves after it was over.”

The “Bye Bye Bye” singer—who shares twins Alexander and Violet, 4, with husband MichaelTurchin—said the guys all “had to start over” after *NSYNC and deal “with the stigma of being in a boy band, which was not at the time a good thing to be in this industry.”
“You were looked at as less than, you were made fun of,” he explained. “So try parlaying a career after being in a band like that where no one took you seriously.”
And when it comes his musical career now, Bass admitted that he wished *NSYNC could have continued their work together, much like their one-time rivals the Backstreet Boys.
“To keep on going with those guys would have been incredible,” he shared, adding that they are still really close and talk every week. “But it wasn’t in the cards for us to continue as a group.”
