Watch: Cara Delevingne Details Battle With Drug Addiction, Suicidal Ideation in Most Personal Interview Yet
Jason Wahler is coming clean about a positive change in his life.
The Laguna Beach alum reflected on how far he has come through his battle with addiction by comparing a recent picture to one of a younger version of himself, which he described as “two very different versions of me.”
“From the outside, it may look like I had everything going for me. But what you couldn’t see was how lost I really was,” Wahler wrote on Instagram Sept. 27, referencing the throwback pic. “I was in active addiction. I was struggling with my mental health. I was insecure, full of shame, and desperately trying to find happiness in worldly things, attention, success, relationships, validation, anything that might fill the emptiness I felt inside.”
how he felt “completely alone” at the time despite being “surrounded by people,” noting he had both “an overinflated ego” and “an incredibly underestimated sense of self-worth.”
Wahler—who appeared on a 2010 episode of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and detailed a relapse in 2018 throughout his struggles with addiction—went on to note that his current photo “isn’t a picture of a man who figured everything out”
“It’s a picture of a man who finally surrendered,” he continued. “I became willing to get honest about what was really going on in my life. I asked for help. I took direction. I did the work. I stopped running from the things I was ashamed of and started bringing them into the light.”
And the dad to kids Delilah Ray, 9, Wyatt Ragle, 5, and August Robert, 16 months, with wife Ashley Slack credits his faith for helping him persevere.
“Somewhere along that journey, God began showing me that the life I had been desperately searching for wasn’t found in any of the things I thought would make me happy,” he added. “I found purpose. I found passion. I found peace and contentment. I learned to become comfortable in my own skin. I began letting go of shame and discovering who God created me to be.”
While the Hills star shared his addiction battle means he still has “difficult days,” he is making sure to use the strength he’s found to encourage others.
“If you’re looking at the photo on the left and seeing a little bit of yourself, please know this: where you are today does not have to be where your story ends,” he wrote. “Get honest. Ask for help. Be willing to take direction. Do the work. And most importantly, don’t underestimate what God can do with a life that is fully surrendered to Him.”
As Wahler sees it, “The life I was searching everywhere for was waiting on the other side of surrender.”
