Watch: Kristi Yamaguchi Addresses Intimate Olympic Village Rumors
Kristi Yamaguchi isn’t skating around the reality of her divorce from Bret Hedican.
The Olympic ice skater offered some rare insight into her life, confirming that she and Bret divorced last year after more than two decades of marriage. However, the couple—who share daughters Keara, 22, and Emma, 20—had no hard feelings about the breakup, with Kristi noting they were on the same page when making the difficult decision.
“After 23 years together, we had an amazing marriage and loving family—especially bringing up our two daughters together—but I think it got to a point where we amicably thought maybe we aren’t at our happiest and we’d be happier separating,” Kristi told People in an interview published on April 13. “We decided to separate and eventually divorce.”
Bret and Kristi married in 2000 after meeting at the 1992 Winter Olympics. At the time, Bret, 55, was competing with Team USA’s hockey team while Kristi, 54, was a member of the U.S. figure skating team.
She would ultimately go on to win the gold medal that year—becoming the first Asian-American to do so at the Winter Games—while Bret pursued a 17-season career in the NHL.
Through the years, the couple not only bonded over their passion for sports, but also their love for their family. And in many cases, those two often overlapped, with Kristi even revealing in 2017 that she and her daughters would ice skate together.
But, at some point in 2023, Bret and Kristi decided to separate, though neither made that news public.

Now that their divorce has been finalized and both their kids are in college, Kristi is focused on skating into her next chapter.
“I’m looking forward to what is around the corner, or what the future could look like,” she told People. “There’s a lot of life left to live, whether it’s starting to date or new relationships, but also just personally enjoying where I am right now and the opportunities ahead.”
“[I have] absolutely no regrets from the past,” she continued. “We’ve got a beautiful family and incredible memories, but I’m looking forward to creating new ones.”
For the two-time World Figure Skating champion, that also means cheering on her two daughters as they begin their own lives.
“Being a mom and seeing them grow up and pursuing their own passions now, it’s been very rewarding and fun to see happen,” she shared. “It’s bittersweet because you feel, as a mom, they’ve grown up so fast. You so vividly remember them as toddlers, starting grade school and those moments.”
“But, it’s so fulfilling to see how they’ve grown up and are going after their dreams now,” she added. “It’s fulfilling to see them spreading their wings.”
Kristi and Bret aren’t the only couple who have gone their separate ways recently. Keep reading to see who else broke up this year…
