The New York Knicks would like to do a two-fer and repeat their championship run this season. But, their roster is a bit different than last year at this time. That’s what happens when you win a championship and have to deal with the realities of budgeting in the NBA.

One of the biggest hits was losing Mitchell Robinson to the Boston Celtics in free agency. They’ve been looking this summer for a replacement. Of course, they still have Jalen Brunson, and their core, but they need more.
So, the Knicks are still looking at the free agents remaining to boost their lineup. Unfortunately, one free agent they had their eye on is off the table.
Nick Richards, one of the centers the Knicks were looking to as a help to their frontcourt, is signing a one-year contract with the Miami Heat, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania.
“Free agent center Nick Richards has agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Heat, sources tell ESPN,” Charania stated on X. “After signing Klay Thompson, the Heat fill roster slot No. 14 with a reserve big man.”

This is simply a bummer for New York. Richards was absolutely one of the best remaining centers on the free-agent market. He would have made a great complement and added depth to Andre Drummond and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Richards will take up the 14th standard roster spot on the Heat’s roster, after the signing of Klay Thompson. Charania didn’t disclose any financial terms of the agreement. There’s also no word on whether the Knicks made an offer to Richards.
Last season, Richards, 28, averaged 5.8 points and 5.1 rebounds over 48 games playing for Phoenix and Chicago. He performed the best with the Bulls, averaging 9.4 points and 7.6 rebounds in 20 games.
Not being able to get Richards stings, but the Knicks have time to keep looking at who’s available on the free agency market.
