Things haven’t quite gone the way that Klay Thompson expected they would when he joined the Dallas Mavericks before the 2024-25 NBA season.

Thompson joined the Mavs to play on a contending team alongside star guard Luka Doncic. Instead, Dallas traded Doncic prior to the trade deadline last season and now appears to be in the midst of a rebuild.
That’s not exactly what Thompson signed up for in this latter stage of his career. So, it’s fair to wonder if he wants to continue his career in Dallas.
Thompson was asked directly about his future in Dallas following the Mavericks 149-128 season-closing victory over the Chicago Bulls on Sunday night and he provided an honest answer.
“I’m not sure. I mean, I’m under contract, so I do [expect to be here]. But I’ve definitely learned in my time in Dallas, things can change on a dime. I’m just here to have a great time and put my best foot forward, that’s all you can do, really,” Thompson said.

“That’s the hardest part of being an NBA player. They think they pay you for the records broken or the rings won, but it’s really, they pay you for being able to be traded, being on the road away from your family on a consistent basis, going through injury, and all the stuff that the common fan doesn’t really see. That’s what really makes it difficult.”
