Watch: ‘Riverdale’ Star KJ Apa Reveals “Wake-Up” Punch from Cole Sprouse Over His Drug Use
KJ Apacan always lean on his Riverdale High School friends.
While detailing the ups and downs of his sobriety journey, the Riverdale alum detailed a confrontation with costar Cole Sprouseat a Vancouver strip club that took a turn when the Disney Channel alum—whose brother Dylan Sprouse was with them—learned Apa had relapsed.
“He punched me in the face and I ran away,” the 29-year-old shared on the July 21 episode of the Wildmen with Dylan Sprouse and Brendan Columbus podcast. “He hit me because we were in a strip club and at this time, I was doing a lot of drugs.”
“A lot of my close friends were worried about me and he had learned that I was doing drugs again,” The Hate U Give actor explained, emphasizing his emotional reaction to the incident, “It was a wake-up punch.”
Apa—who said he has been sober for more than a year—reflected on just how difficult navigating sobriety was while filming the CW show from 2017 to 2023.
“Anything that makes me feel good, I will abuse,” he explained. “It’s something that I’ve learned about myself. Even eating—my relationship with eating, especially on that show, was bad.”
“I used to eat donuts all day long,” he recalled, adding that he’d then “go back to my trailer, throw up.”
Although Apa—who starred alongside Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and Madelaine Petsch—struggled in his sobriety for years, bidding farewell to his character Archie Andrews after seven seasons gave him the chance to reevaluate his life.

“When I first came off Riverdale,” he shared, “I didn’t know if I liked acting. I didn’t know if I belonged in this industry. It took a few years. Honestly, the first step was getting sober.”
“I just had so much cloudiness,” Apa admitted. “I had so many things that I was doing that were so unhealthy that bred through that show in me: having my shirt off all the time, even just experiencing fame.”
While the I Still Believe star—dad to 4-year-old son Sasha with ex Clara Berry—knows that sobriety isn’t linear, he has found what works best when it comes to handling addiction.
As he put it, “I’ve identified it. I know what it is and now I know how to talk to it.”
But Apa isn’t the only celeb to share insight into their health. Keep reading for more stars who’ve detailed their own sobriety journeys.
