Watch: Kevin McKidd’s Next TV Role Revealed After ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Exit
Kevin McKidd is staying booked and busy after checking out of Grey Sloane Memorial Hospital.
The Grey’s Anatomy star—who announced last month he’s leaving the long-running ABC medical drama after nearly 20 years—has landed the lead role in ITV’s upcoming British drama series The Only Suspect, multiple outlets confirmed April 22.
The thriller, according to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, follows the story of Alex (McKidd), a London man who secretly buried a dead body 30 years ago, long before he built a picture-perfect suburban life with his partner Beth. But a new development threatens to unearth Alex’s dark past.
“The abandoned railway track where the body was hidden—running behind Alex and Beth’s street—is being transformed into a nature trail,” read the show’s synopsis, per the outlets. “What is a triumph for the neighbourhood instead threatens catastrophe for Alex…Because Alex is the young man who buried the body.”
The description continued, “Having spent decades living under an assumed name, Alex now faces the unravelling of everything he has built. As diggers prepare to break ground on the very spot where his secret lies, his carefully constructed life spirals—and he must decide how far he is willing to go to keep the truth buried.”
McKidd, who hails from Scotland, called the new gig across the pond a “coming home for me” after two decades working on the Grey’s set in Los Angeles, adding in a statement, “As an actor, the complex and multilayered role of Alex is exciting to explore.”
The Only Suspect marks McKidd’s first role since he shocked fans by announcing his Grey’s character Dr. Owen Hunt will be exiting the operating room when the season 22 finale airs May 7.

“Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything the show has given me over the years,” the 52-year-old—who joined the series during season five in 2008—wrote in a statement to multiple outlets March 25. “Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped me enormously, and I’ve had the privilege of working with an extraordinary group of people throughout that time.”
McKidd also shared love and gratitude to the series’ original showrunner Shonda Rhimes.
“I’m looking forward to what’s ahead,” he added, “building new work, telling new stories, and taking everything I’ve learned into the next phase of my career.”
