Watch: Kelly Ripa Reveals “Destination” Plans for Her Own Funeral
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are paws-itively thrilled about their family’s newest addition.
In fact, the longtime couple quipped that they have a “new baby” after adopting a rescue dog who appeared on the Oct. 12 episode of Live With Kelly and Mark as part of Adopt a Dog Week.
“We have news,” Consuelos announced during the Oct. 13 broadcast. “We adopted Javi yesterday.”
Explaining how Javi— who was originally named Lucas by animal rescue organization Pet ResQ Inc.—hasn’t officially moved into their home yet since he’s still undergoing medical tests, Ripa jokingly called herself and Consuelos “expectant parents.”
“I started nesting last night,” shared Ripa, who’s mom to kids Michael Consuelos, 29, Lola Consuelos, 25, and Joaquin Consuelos, 23, with her husband of 30 years. “I couldn’t sleep. I started making a nest.”
And it seems the family’s other pooch Lena is warming up to Javi as well. While Ripa admitted that Lena was “terrified of Javi as she is every other dog” during their first “meet cute” backstage, Consuelos believes the two are going to be “great buddies” fur-ever.
“We did bring Lena down here yesterday after Javi was here, and we kind of had a little chemistry test,” Consuelos told the audience. “She didn’t bark at Javi.”
It especially helped that Javi bares a striking resemblance to Ripa and Consuelos’ late dog Chewie, who died last year at age 17.
“As I was sitting there watching you hold Javi,” Ripa told Consuelos, “I kept thinking about how much Javi reminded me of Chewie. And I was thinking, ‘Oh, I bet you Chewie sent Javi here for us.'”
She continued, “My beloved dog, who I will never get over and mourn for the rest of my life, sent this little dog here.”
Ripa also found it serendipitous that Javi came into her and Consuelos’ life the same way Lena did six years ago, when the Maltese/Shih Tzu mix appeared on a Live segment about rescue pups.
“I really decided I was only going to get a dog—and I didn’t really care about the breed—but I wanted a dog that looked exactly like Lena. Just a small little black dog,” she added to her husband. “And then you brought this Chewie-like dog, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’”
