Kansas came out victorious 51-6 in its season opener against Long Island tonight, moving to 1-0 on the year ahead of a crucial matchup against Missouri.
The Jayhawks showed a number of positive signs in the win, including from the offensive unit. Isaiah Marshall guided the offense to several encouraging drives throughout his impressive first collegiate start.
However, none of that would have been possible without Buffalo transfer Nik McMillan’s contributions. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound wideout was absolutely incredible in one half of work, finishing with six receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Now that we’ve seen what McMillan is capable of, he has proven that he can be trusted as the Jayhawks’ WR1 moving forward.
The coaching staff acquired McMillan via the transfer portal in the offseason to replace Emmanuel Henderson Jr., who moved on to the NFL after graduating. Considering what we saw from McMillan, it is safe to say that he might even be an upgrade over the speedster from Alabama.
Every single catch we saw from McMillan today was out of this world. He made a toe-drag catch along the sideline, hauled in multiple jump balls where he had to contort his body to make the grab, and got his feet in for his first touchdown as a Jayhawk in the corner of the end zone.
Keep in mind, he did all of this today without the team’s second-most dangerous receiving weapon on the field in Cam Pickett. Once the Jayhawks’ star slot wideout is healthy, it should open up the offense even more for McMillan and Marshall.
Regardless of who the opponent was today, no ordinary receiver makes the catches McMillan did look easy. All eyes will be on him to keep the offense going in the Border Showdown next Friday.
