Watch: John Goodman Shares How “Eating Alcoholically” Made Him 400 Pounds Before Dramatic Weight Loss
John Goodman is digging deep about his health journey.
Three years after debuting his 200-pound weight loss, the Roseanne alum detailed how it felt like after getting sober in 2007, he’d traded his alcoholism for disordered eating—until he eventually hit his breaking point following a decades-long struggle with his weight.
“I’d lose 60 pounds in a summer, gain it all back. 70 pounds, 80 pounds,” Goodman shared in an interview with The New Yorker published Oct. 18. “And that got tiring.”
“I took steps so I wouldn’t have to do that anymore,” he continued. “I was almost 400 pounds. I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking.”
It’s partly why the Digger actor ultimately decided to undergo a stomach operation to aid his weight loss, eventually losing half his body weight—a dramatic transformation he reveaed in 2023.
The procedure, however, did leave the actor with some lasting side effects.
As Goodman revealed, “I also turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under my skin, and I’m cold all the time.”
But it was the Monsters Inc star’s decision to quit drinking that first kicked off his health journey.
Looking back, Goodman noted that alcohol “sustained” his “immaturity,” but he eventually “got sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
“The thing about instant gratification is you don’t really care what’s going to happen right after it—which always led to bigger hangovers or me getting the shakes,” he explained, “and having to drink to get rid of the shakes, and that vicious cycle.”
But not only did his drinking affect his physical self, he found it also negatively impacted his personality.
“I was in a position, when I quit, where I had to be hospitalized one way or the other,” he added. “I just was tired of it, and I wanted to stop. I was delaying my maturation by drinking, and I had a lot of catching up to do, just realizing how selfish it made me.”
The Connors alum admitted that he was “overlooking real life,” adding that he learned “it was great to see there was a life where I didn’t have to use anything to enjoy it.”

As for his priority now? After the Big Lebowski star fell on the set of a film alongside Tom Cruise in March 2025, fracturing a hip, he’s determined to build up his strength through low-impact exercises.
“Basically, building up the core, balance, strength training, stuff like that, so I don’t fall down—which I did as soon as I got back to London from Christmas break,” Goodman explained. “I was walking on set in my stocking feet, which was very stupid, and I was moving around Tom and my feet slid on the floor. I came down parallel to the ground, on my hip, and fractured it.”
As for his health journey, Goodman isn’t the only celebrity to share a behind-the-scenes look at their weight loss journey. For other transformations, read on.
