Watch: Joe Manganiello Spent 7 Years Anticipating His Death During Debilitating Autoimmune Disease Battle
Joe Manganiellois looking back at a breaking point.
The Magic Mike star candidly opens up about his seven-year battle with a mysterious autoimmune diseasein his forthcoming memoir Bloodlines, detailing the toll the illness took on all aspects of his life—including his marriage to SofíaVergara.
The way the 49-year-old remembers it, while he was trying to find a diagnosis for his illness, his marriage became “devoid of any emotionality whatsoever,” according to an excerpt from the book, out Oct. 13, published by People. During that time, he says the Modern Family alum wouldn’t hug him, even if he requested it of her.
He ultimately found solace in his 5-lb chihuahua Bubbles, a sickly puppy he adopted in 2019. In the Oct. 7 interview with People, he credits the small pup with helping him during bouts of suicidal ideation, although he says in the book that Vergara would make comments about the dog.
The former couple also struggled with starting a family, a topic both of them have touched on before, with Manganiello writing in his memoir that after failed IVF attempts left them considering an egg donor. However, as he was navigating with a serious illness he didn’t want to die and leave Vergara, with whom he split in 2023, with a child “who wasn’t biologically hers.”
For Manganiello, recounting the breakdown of their marriage and his illness in his memoir proved a way to tell his own narrative, saying to People, “There were things said and printed about me that were false.”

Since their split, both Manganiello and Vergara—who shares son Manolo, 35, with ex JoeGonzalez—have spoken about the end of their marriage, with Manganiello previously noting their relationship did not end because he wanted children and she didn’t.
“We had a huge conversation right out of the gate during the first month we dated,” he told Men’s Journal in 2024. “I said, ‘If you’re done with kids, then I understand. Just tell me, and I’ll know what this is, and that’s okay.’ And I swore to her that I would never leave if it didn’t work out. And I didn’t.”
At the time, Manganiello, who is now engaged to Caitlin O’Connor, suggested that his and Vergara’s split came down to the fact that “two people grew apart, and sometimes that happens.”

“To be painted as if I had some sort of midlife crisis,” he continued, “and after nine years, turned to somebody and gave them an ultimatum of, ‘Do this potentially unhealthy thing to your body, or else I’m gone’? That’s never who I was.”
However, Vergara remained indifferent to Manganiello’s claims about them growing apart.
“At the end of the day, you never even know if that’s what he said for real,” she explained toVariety in 2024. “I’ve read a lot of things that I’ve said that I’m like, ‘Huh?’ What am I gonna do, call him? I don’t know if he even said that.”
