The Los Angeles Chargers have now fallen to 0-5 to begin the 2026 NFL season, a season where they were supposed to be one of the Super Bowl frontrunners. A season where the exciting hiring of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel was supposed to finally give Justin Herbert an environment conducive to success. A season where new hire Chris O’Leary was supposed to continue the elite defensive ecosystem left by now-Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter.
The fact of the matter is that this team is in complete shambles and their leader, Jim Harbaugh, is now running out of answers to be able to help this team fight for competency in the National Football League.
Harbaugh, known for quirky catchphrases and toughness that is infectious through football locker rooms, is seemingly out of, to quote one of those aforementioned catchphrases, “an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.”
In the most recent post-game press conference after the Denver Broncos took a 23-17 victory over the Bolts in Week 5, Harbaugh was asked about the message for the team after now being 0-5. He responded with: “Yeah, I don’t know what that message is.”
An obviously damning statement from the “CEO” head coach who is supposed to be known for his leadership and mentality. He does follow up that statement with a generic motivational comment: ” It’s just in the players to just fight their hearts out, to play, give it everything they have. That’s the only way. That’s the best way.”
The entire press conference exchange is another shake to what is the Chargers’ crumbling foundation. While it was shut down, there have already been talks of Mike McDaniel being fired, with that hot seat seemingly spreading to Jim Harbaugh. Simply put, the team is desperate for answers, and their leader has none.
Even with the hot seat beginning to heat up, it should be noted that Harbaugh’s ability to motivate is highly respected throughout league circles, with former Chargers general manager Tom Telesco recently commenting on Daniel Jeremiah’s podcast, Move the Sticks, “If you didn’t have a head coach right now and you’re like, ‘We need someone to help us get out of this [the 0-4 start],’ it’d probably be Jim Harbaugh.” This belief is likely shared within the Chargers front office, making the Harbaugh exit as the Bolts’ head coach a much longer wait than if he were someone else.
