Watch: Jessica Chastain Shares How Harvard University Master’s Program Has Changed Her
Jessica Chastain needs no help stealing the show.
The Help actress debuted a bold new look at the 2026 Breakthrough Prize Ceremony in Santa Monica, Calif., on April 18, rocking a super short bob that fell just above her chin.
Chastain, 49, chopped off her long wavy locks before the red carpet, styling the bob with a dramatic side part and pairing the statement-making style with a golden Oscar de la Renta gown for the evening. While her hair was giving Hollywood glam, her dress leaned into some bohemian vibes with a palm print and thick tassel hemline.
She later gave a behind-the-scenes look of the major haircut in a before-and-after video on Instagram April 19, captioning it, “Choppity chop.”
Her hairstylist Renato Campora celebrated her “fresh” style in a post of his own, while Chastain’s pals hyped her up on social media, including Julianne Hough, who wrote, “Welcome to the bob life.”
While Chastain is open to experimenting with different lengths, you won’t see the Oscar winner changing up her color.
“As a child, I didn’t want to be different—I wanted to look the same as everyone else because I didn’t want to be singled out,” she told Refinery29 in 2017, per Today. “I was ridiculed for having red hair; for having freckles.”
“Whatever you are ridiculed about that makes you different is what you’ll celebrate in the future,” she continued. “If I wanted to dye my hair, I could, but I realized that’s who I am, and my differences [make me] special.”
So, these days, Chastain won’t alter her signature orange hue for a role.
“The one way to change my physicality is through wigs,” she explained. “Wigs are amazing because they not only change your hair color, they can also change your hairline and the texture.”

And her individuality extends to fashion, too, as Chastain admitted she has never been one to care about what’s en vogue.
“I don’t really pay attention to fashion trends in that way,” she told Elle Spain in March 2025. “If there was a trend that I’d secretly wish would come back, I would just wear it. I don’t feel like, ‘Oh I’m not allowed to wear that because people say.’ … I kind of just wear what I like.”
