Watch: Survivor’s Jeff Probst Reacts After Accidentally Spoiling Major Season 50 Finale Moment
Spoilers for the season 50 finale of Survivor ahead.
Jeff Probst has officially spoken.
The longtime Survivor host was at the center of a major blunder during the season 50 live finale on May 20, when he accidentally revealed Rizo Velovic’s elimination—and welcomed him to the jury of axed contestants—before that part of the episode had aired. As for what was going through his mind in that moment?
“What’s happening when you’re doing a Survivorfinale is two things,” Jeff began on CBS Mornings May 21. “You’re running the show—the episode. And then we’re doing these live hits where I come out and I talk to one of the players.”
As such, he admitted, “I’m not watching the show.”
Instead, the 64-year-old is usually backstage getting ready for his interviews with the Survivor contestants—and in this case prepping for his conversation with Rizo.
“I come out, we’re all set up on the stage. We’ve got an empty seat for Rizo,” he recalled. “I don’t think anything’s weird.”
In fact, it wasn’t until he heard the 1,200-person audience—plus the already-introduced jury members—collectively gasp about the spoiler that he even realized something was wrong. And even now, he’s still not quite sure how the gaffe happened.
“We have a big team, mistakes happen, but we just got ahead of ourselves. None of us saw it,” Jeff said. “Rizo even told me later, he goes, ‘I was standing next to you, going, “I don’t know why he’s going to send me over to the jury, I haven’t even lost yet.”’ So—live TV!”

And the five-time Emmy winner had shared as much on the finale episode, not long after dropping the spoiler.
“I love doing live television,” he said on the episode. “In case you’re confused, this is what happened: We were going to show you fire-making and then have the loser of fire-making, Rizo, come out and talk about how charming he is.”
“Instead, we did a Survivor twist,” he jokingly continued. “It’s the last twist of the season—we called it a peek into the future. So, now we’re going to watch Rizo lose in fire to Jonathan [Young].”

From there, Jonathan joined JoeHunter and AubryBracco as part of the final three before Aubry emerged victorious as the season’s winner. And the 39-year-old already has plans for her $2 million prize.
“I have a 2-and-a-half-year-old,” Aubry told E! News after the finale, “and I want to make sure his future is all set.”
But of course, she also had a few ideas for herself, saying, “I really want a dry sauna, you know, an infrared sauna. But I like to keep it kinda low key.”
