Watch: Jane Fonda Clarifies Her Comments on Barbra Streisand’s Oscars Tribute to Robert Redford
Jane Fonda didn’t mean to rain on Barbra Streisand’s Oscars tribute.
After the Grace and Frankie star seemed to question the decision to have Streisand honor the late Robert Redford at the 2026 Oscars, pointing to her own decades of collaboration with the Sting actor, she subsequently admitted the apparent dig was simply a quip that didn’t land.
“Barbra came on the Oscars thing to honor Bob,” Fonda recalled on stage at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood April 30, per Entertainment Weekly. “I was on the press line, and I thought I was being funny.”
However, the 88-year-old actually very much enjoyed Streisand’s tribute to Redford, her costar in the 1973 film The Way We Were.
“I thought it was fabulous that they had Barbra out there,” Fonda continued, “because that was such an iconic movie and the song was so incredibly beautiful.”
She added, “Bob would have liked it.”
Indeed, Streisand’s tribute to Redford, who died on Sept. 16 at age 89, included a touching rendition of The Way We Were’s title song as well as her remembrance of one of their final conversations.
“I miss him now more than ever, even how he loved teasing me,” Barbra shared during the March 15 Oscars. “He’d call me, ‘Babs.’ And I’d say, ‘Bob, you know, do I look like a Babs?’ But the way he said it made me laugh.”

“Many years later, we were chatting on the phone about the usual, politics, art, Modigliani—our favorite,” the 84-year-old said. “And as we were hanging up, he said, ‘Babs, I love you dearly, and I always will.’”
Still, that phone called stayed with Barbra and played a role in the final note she wrote to Robert: “I ended it with, ‘I love you too,’ and I signed it ‘Babs.’”
Following the Oscars—which also featured special tributes to the late Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner as well as Catherine O’Hara and Diane Keaton during its In Memoriam—Fonda had seemingly expressed dismay at not being asked to honor Redford. As she put it to Entertainment Tonightat the time, “I wanna know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford?”
“She only made one movie with him,” Fonda—who costarred with Redford in The Chase (1966), Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Electric Horseman (1979) and Our Souls at Night (2017)—continued. “I made four. I have more to say.”

But though she put any rumblings of bad blood with Streisand over the Oscars tribute to rest, Fonda has been open about her longtime bond with the All the President’s Men star. And for her, that made it difficult to say goodbye.
“It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone,” Fonda shared in a statement to E! News at the time. “I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way.”
She added of the longtime political and environmental activist, “He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”
