Watch: James McAvoy Says He Was Bullied by Famous Band of Brothers Costar
James McAvoy will have you marveling at his most profitable film.
The X-Men: First Class star revealed that while he’s made plenty of high-grossing movies throughout his career, there’s one film that still haunts his residuals checks years later: M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 psychological horror Split.
“The only one that really consistently pays me is Split,” McAvoy shared on the Oct. 15 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, noting it helped that the film’s budget was so low. “I think it was made for like $6 million or something like that.”
“In our first weekend, we made 40 [million],” he added. “So, we were in profit.”
Indeed, Split made $40.2 million during its first week at the box office, ultimately earning $278.5 million worldwide—a frightfully good return on its budget.
That’s why McAvoy’s first residual check from the was no small scream. As the 47-year-old put it, “It was bonkers.”
However, he was quick to note the rarity of that situation, explaining how high-paying residuals tend to only come in for films where the contract includes a backend deal.
“I very rarely see anything from anything,” McAvoy shared. “You get the odd check for like, a couple hundred quid here. Sometimes you get checks for 25 cents and you’re like, ‘It literally costs more to post this than it did for me to cash it.’”

But despite Split’s box office success, the movie—in which McAvoy portrayed a man with dissociative identity disorder, playing eight different versions of his character—was largely shut out of awards season.
And while the Marvel actor was proud of his and costars AnyaTaylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson and BettyBuckley‘s performances, he wasn’t necessarily surprised that their film wasn’t part of the conversation.

“I didn’t think it would get welcomed into that sphere much,” he shared. “I think some horror performances or scary movie performances are kind of breaking through now, but even then, it’s not that many.”
That’s why he has no bad blood with awards snubbing Split a decade ago.
“It’s getting a wee bit different now,” McAvoy mused, “but I wasn’t bothered.”
