Watch: Is Ted Lasso Returning for Season 5? Brendan Hunt Says…
Warning: This story contains major spoilers for Ted Lasso season 4, episode 10
For Greyhounds hoping formore Ted Lasso, keep believing.
After the Apple TV comedy’s fourth season concluded Oct. 7, executive producer, writer and co-creator Brendan Hunt—who also stars as Coach Willis Beard—reacted to speculation that a season five renewal is in the near future.
“That’s news to me,” Hunt told Deadline in an interview published Oct. 7. “I certainly hope it happens, and I’m optimistic, but yeah, haven’t heard anything official yet. It would be nice though.”
The Emmy winner also touched on how fellow co-showrunner and titular star Jason Sudeikis is feeling about a season five. After all, Ted Lasso was initially planned as a three-season arc, before it was renewed for season four.
“He plays the cards close to his chest,” Hunt explained to Variety in an interview published Oct. 7. “I’m not privy to whatever poker game that I hope is happening between the powers that be. I think we’ve always basically hoped we were coming back for more than one, but if it ends up just being one, then OK, that’s fine.
“It did end nicely,” he added. “We’ll just have to see.”
Indeed, season four of Ted Lasso—which followed Ted returning to London to coach AFC Richmond’s new women’s football team—appeared to wrap up most storylines in the season four finale, titled “Being Alive.”
ICYMI, the season concluded with Ted passing the baton of team manager over to Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds), demoting himself to assistant manager like Hunt’s Coach Beard. Also changing roles is Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), who accepted a job managing Chelsea FC, however, he’s about to be a dad with Keeley Jones (Juno Temple). Another surprising moment? Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) proposed to her boyfriend Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn).
The finale also included more than one emotional moment. The team mourned the loss of Crown and Anchor pub owner Mae Green (Annette Badland), who died in the ninth episode, while Ted opened up to his son Henry about his father’s suicide.

And though the episode was pitch perfect, it doesn’t mean there still aren’t unanswered questions.
“There’s not much in the way of cliffhangers,” Hunt continued. “But Ted and Beard as peers instead of hierarchically, I’m curious about that. Roy and Keeley becoming parents, curious about that. Rebecca married, curious about that. The fellas running the pub, and how’s the team going to take to Alice as their leader? These are all just more like questions than cliffhangers.”
That said, Hunt pointed out that “there’s not yet any indication that we’re going to get to answer those questions.”
“So at the moment,” he teased, “they’re still lingering in the air.”
