A man died in hospital after going into medical distress in police cells

Independent investigators are looking into the death of a man in jail after a weapons call and arrest in Cranbrook.

On June 27, police located a man on the roof of a building near the intersection of Briar Avenue and 5th Street and who had weapons on him.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) said officers contained the area, arrested the man and took him to the local RCMP detachment.

Shortly after noon the next day, the man was seen to be in medical distress and officers provided aid. Firefighters and paramedics also arrived and took the man to hospital in critical condition.

On June 30, the man was pronounced dead in hospital.

The IIO was notified and must determine whether the death had a connection to the actions or inaction of police.

If police involvement is considered a factor, the chief civilian director will consider whether an offence may have occurred.
