New Zealand batting updates
After 16 overs, NZ are 133/3
-
Looking to break open the scoring, Phillips went on the offensive against veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 16th over, dispatching him for consecutive boundaries to race to 59 off 36 deliveries. Bhuvneshwar finished an expensive four-over spell conceding 50 runs for his single scalp (1/50, Econ 12.50).
-
Phillips brought up his half-century with four towering sixes and three boundaries, maintaining a strike rate near 160. Shortly after, Bevon Jacobs completed a calculated 41-ball maiden T20I half-century (5 fours), perfectly complementing Phillips to flip the momentum squarely back onto the tourists.
After 10 overs, NZ are 66/3
-
Axar Patel bowled in tandem with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prince Yadav, delivering a disciplined spell of 2-0-9-0 to keep a check on the boundary count.
-
From 41/3 inside the powerplay, Phillips and Jacobs have added 31 runs for the 4th wicket to push New Zealand past the 70-mark. With Prince Yadav back into the attack to finish his second over, India will look to break this partnership before the death-overs acceleration begins.
After six overs, NZ are 43/3
-
Arshdeep Singh struck on his ninth delivery, removing Tim Seifert (7) via a catch to Tilak Varma at 9/1. Bhuvneshwar Kumar followed up in the next over, getting Daryl Mitchell (6) caught by Tilak Varma as well to leave the Black Caps reeling at 18/2.
-
Brought in for the final over of the Powerplay, newcomer Prince Yadav made an instant impact. On his second delivery, he castled the dangerous Finn Allen for 16 (14b), conceding just three runs in the over to restrict New Zealand to 43/3 after six overs.
India have won the toss and have opted to field
Four wickets, two balls and 225 runs were the margin that separated the sides in Christchurch on Thursday, and it was enough to leave New Zealand wondering what else they could have done.

The second T20I, at Hagley Oval on Saturday, October 24, will show whether the hosts can turn that frustration into a result or whether India will tighten their grip on the five-match series.
Much of the talk before the toss concerns a team-sheet change that India did not plan. Ishan Kishan has pulled out with a groin strain, and that is expected to bring Vaibhav Sooryavanshi back into the side after a long spell on the bench. His numbers are modest in volume but loud in impact, with an average of 30.75 and a strike rate of 186.36 from eight T20Is, so New Zealand will have to decide quickly how to bowl at him.
The visitors’ bowlers, however, are the ones with homework to do. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Axar Patel went for 49 and 51 respectively in the opener, and the home batters took 67 off the last 30 balls, even without Jasprit Bumrah in the opposition attack. Glenn Phillips and Finn Allen already know the surface well, and they will back themselves to hit just as freely again.
The weather is unlikely to interfere, with clear skies and no rain forecast, though a sharp evening chill and dew could make the ball slippery late in each innings. Whoever wins the toss will probably choose to chase, and the pitch should reward bold strokeplay once the new ball loses its edge.
