In Buenos Aires, São Paulo fall to Boca Juniors in Sul-Americana

On Tuesday (8), São Paulo was beaten 1-0 by Boca Juniors (ARG) at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires (ARG) in the first leg of the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana quarterfinals. The Argentine side‘s goal was scored by Merentiel.

The first half was evenly matched, with both teams creating attacking opportunities. In the 11th minute, Luciano received a pass from Marcos Antonio and got a dangerous shot away, but the defense blocked it. In the 16th minute, São Paulo had their best chance of the first half. Iago delivered a pinpoint cross and Luciano headed it on target, forcing a good save from the goalkeeper. In the 30th minute, Luciano played Iago through on the left, the full-back sent in a low cross, and Calleri shot wide. Despite the chances, the score remained level.

In the second half, Boca Juniors opened the scoring in the 6th minute through Merentiel. In the 16th minute, Artur crossed to the far post, Sabino challenged in the air, and Domingos Duarte got the shot away, but the goalkeeper made the save. In the 35th minute, Iago crossed for Gustavo Santana to head at the near post, but the ball went out for a goal kick.

Tricolor’s next match will be against Palmeiras on Saturday (12) at 6:30 p.m. at Nubank Parque, for the 27th round of the Brasileirão. The return leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana quarterfinals will be next Tuesday (15) at 9:30 p.m. at MorumBIS.
