A major fire ripped through Bangkok’s Khlong Thom Centre on Friday night, triggering explosions and collapsing parts of the parking structure. Three emergency workers were injured as intense flames, heavy smoke and a water shortage battered crews from nine fire stations. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reached the scene as smoke drifted towards Bang Sue and residents were warned to close windows. Firefighters stopped the blaze from reaching neighbouring buildings, but unstable wreckage prevented a complete search and concealed burning hotspots. No deaths were confirmed, while the cause and full commercial losses remained unknown at this stage.
A major fire tore through Khlong Thom Centre in central Bangkok on Friday night, injuring three emergency workers. Flames consumed ground-floor shops before reaching a mezzanine beneath the parking area. Intermittent explosions sounded inside as the building suffered several structural collapses. Firefighters contained the blaze within the centre, but overnight suppression work continued.

The Rama 199 emergency centre received the first report at 8.42 pm on August 28. The caller reported a fire inside the commercial centre on Worachak Road. In response, Suan Mali Fire and Rescue Station immediately dispatched crews. They arrived to find flames burning inside a first-floor shop.
By 8.50 pm, commanders had requested reinforcements from across Bangkok. Crews came from Phaya Thai, Banthat Thong, Bang Rak and Phu Khao Thong stations. In parallel, Samsen, Phahonyothin, Bang Pho and Sutthisan stations sent additional firefighters. Dozens of engines and support vehicles soon filled the surrounding roads.

The fire spread rapidly through tightly packed retail premises. The centre contained plastics, gas equipment, electronic devices and other combustible products. As a result, crews faced intense heat, dense smoke and difficult interior access. Packed merchandise also blocked routes towards several burning sections.
At 9.10 pm, flames reached the mezzanine beneath the parking area. Two minutes later, reports said fire covered the affected shop area. At that point, crews directed water through entrances and openings around the building. Extreme heat prevented firefighters from reaching the heart of the blaze.
Thick smoke poured from the centre and spread across the commercial district. Meanwhile, flames became visible from several sides of the structure. At 9.22 pm, repeated explosions were heard from inside. Fire and Rescue Thailand said the centre had already been burning heavily.
The source of those explosions was not immediately established. Notably, the building housed electronic devices, plastics, gas equipment and other flammable materials. These products continued feeding the blaze as it advanced through the shops. Firefighters heard further blasts while operating close to the building.
By 9.27 pm, the fire remained uncontrolled near the parking entrance. At the same time, flames started appearing at the rear. The spread placed adjoining commercial premises under direct threat. Commanders therefore focused on keeping the fire inside Khlong Thom Centre.
Firefighters contain flames as collapsing awning injures crews and blocks the search of Khlong Thom
On another front, firefighters attacked the blaze from the Chao Khamrop Road side. Crews positioned hoses along roads surrounding the complex. Later reports said open flames had not crossed into neighbouring buildings. Even so, large sections of the centre continued burning.
The interior flames began subsiding at about 9.35 pm. However, serious structural damage was already developing. Fire had consumed shop areas and reached sections beneath the parking structure. Falling material then created another danger for crews below.
At 9.51 pm, the building’s awning began collapsing. Initially, two emergency workers were reported injured during the operation. One was a volunteer attached to a firefighting team. The other was a firefighter from Suan Mali Fire and Rescue Station.
Both men were removed from the danger zone and taken to Central Hospital. Subsequently, officials reported that a Samsen firefighter was also injured. All three received first aid before hospital transfer. Their conditions were not disclosed in the overnight updates.
No deaths were confirmed in the available reports. Separately, officials released no confirmed casualty count covering traders or members of the public. Rescue teams still needed to search the damaged centre. Yet flames, heat and collapsing sections prevented a complete interior search.
Water shortage hits fire crews as parking structure collapses and Bangkok governor reaches the scene
Firefighters also encountered a serious water shortage. In response to that problem, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration water trucks were urgently mobilised. Continuous supplies were needed across the ground floor, mezzanine and parking structure. The shortage emerged during the fire’s most dangerous stage.
At 9.59 pm, reports said part of the building had collapsed. The affected section was identified as part of the parking structure. Despite that collapse, movement continued elsewhere in the building. At 10.16 pm, further sections reportedly began giving way.
Accordingly, firefighters withdrew to defensive positions around the unstable centre. Falling awnings, metalwork and building materials restricted their movements. Structural damage also blocked a direct interior attack. Instead, crews poured water through entrances and other accessible openings.
At 10.01 pm, emergency teams reported progress in containing the blaze. Flames remained within Khlong Thom Centre and had not reached neighbouring buildings. Likewise, the fire on the Chao Khamrop Road side was contained. Large quantities of commercial stock continued burning inside.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt arrived at the scene at about 10 pm. At that stage, the fire near the parking ramp remained uncontrolled. As part of the response, more water trucks and emergency vehicles entered the district. Roads around the centre were closed or restricted.
Three emergency workers injured as toxic smoke from Khlong Thom fire drifts across northern Bangkok
By 10.41 pm, officials had confirmed three injured emergency workers. They comprised one volunteer and firefighters from Suan Mali and Samsen stations. All three were taken to Central Hospital. Nevertheless, no detailed medical assessment was released.
Heavy smoke travelled far beyond Pom Prap Sattru Phai district. Reports said the plume reached parts of Bang Sue. Consequently, residents were advised to protect themselves against smoke inhalation. People near the fire were urged to close windows and limit outdoor exposure.
The warning followed reports of dense smoke moving with the wind. Significantly, plastics and electronic products were among the materials burning inside. No official air-quality readings were released during the emergency. The precise contents of the smoke were also not confirmed.
Khlong Thom is one of Bangkok’s best-known commercial districts. Traders sell electronics, tools, machinery parts, vehicle accessories and second-hand goods. Because of this layout, shops and warehouses stand close together along narrow roads. Emergency access was therefore difficult throughout Friday night.
Khlong Thom Centre stands on Worachak Road near Bangkok’s Chinatown district. The surrounding area contains older commercial buildings, markets and packed retail premises. Within minutes, local roads filled with engines, tankers, ambulances and rescue vehicles. Police and emergency personnel restricted access to preserve routes for incoming crews.

The fire developed quickly after the first emergency call. Within eight minutes, commanders sought crews from eight additional stations. By 9.10 pm, flames had reached the mezzanine. Just two minutes later, fire reportedly covered the affected interior.
Ten minutes afterwards, the first intermittent explosions were reported. Shortly thereafter, flames appeared at the rear of the building. Fire beside the parking entrance also remained uncontrolled. Structural failures followed before 10 pm.
The centre’s commercial contents complicated every stage of the operation. Plastic goods produced intense flames and heavy smoke. Additionally, electronic devices and gas-related equipment presented further hazards. Tightly packed stock restricted movement through the burning premises.
Tankers reinforced crews as traders await answers over destroyed shops, damaged vehicles and cause
The water shortage placed further pressure on crews. To address it, city tankers were rushed into the district. Fire engines required uninterrupted supplies to attack several areas simultaneously. Inside, flames continued burning beneath damaged sections of the structure.
Firefighters succeeded in shielding adjoining buildings from open flames. On the perimeter, crews checked nearby premises for heat damage and hidden fire spread. They also monitored rooftops and shared walls. The dense commercial layout left little separation between structures.
Traders could not enter the centre to inspect their shops. The premises remained unsafe because of heat, smoke and structural movement. Furthermore, officials had not confirmed how many businesses were destroyed. No reliable estimate of financial losses was available.
The condition of vehicles inside the parking area was also unknown. Reports identified that structure as one of the damaged sections. Given the danger, emergency teams could not conduct a complete inspection. Further movement remained possible while burned materials cooled.
Investigators had not established how the fire began. The first confirmed location was a ground-floor shop. Still, no preliminary finding identified an electrical fault, failed equipment or another source. A detailed examination required firefighters to secure the site first.

Early Saturday reports continued carrying operational information from Friday night. Crucially, they provided no confirmed time when the fire was fully extinguished. The latest verified position said crews had contained it inside Khlong Thom Centre. Cooling and suppression operations continued around the damaged complex.
Officials had not released a final casualty count or damage assessment. Beyond that, investigators still needed access to the shop where the fire began. Search teams faced unstable debris throughout the building. The scale of destruction required daylight inspection.
The sequence began with flames inside a single ground-floor retail unit. It then moved into the mezzanine beneath the parking area. Soon afterwards, explosions sounded and fire appeared at the rear. Finally, the awning and sections of the parking structure began collapsing.

The fire placed multiple stations into one concentrated operation. Suan Mali crews led the initial response. Reinforcements then arrived from eight stations across Bangkok. Together, they worked to protect surrounding shops while fighting the centre’s interior blaze.
The injuries reflected the risks around the failing structure. One volunteer was hurt alongside firefighters from Suan Mali and Samsen. All three required transfer to Central Hospital. No further details about their treatment were immediately available.
The smoke plume also widened the incident beyond Khlong Thom. It drifted towards other Bangkok areas, including Bang Sue. In turn, residents faced exposure far from the burning centre. Emergency warnings focused on reducing contact with the heavy smoke.
The commercial damage remained impossible to calculate overnight. Shops contained electronics, plastics, tools and vehicle accessories. Many units stood within the worst-affected ground-floor area. Above them, fire and collapse damaged the mezzanine and parking structure.
Crews remained concerned about burning material hidden beneath debris. Such hotspots required prolonged cooling before the wreckage could be searched. Against that backdrop, firefighters maintained positions around the building. Water continued flowing into openings throughout the night.
