UT Rio Grande Valley takes a major step in its young football history Saturday when the Vaqueros visit UTSA at the Alamodome in San Antonio, with kickoff set for 3:30 PM ET on ESPN+. The matchup will be the first-ever meeting between the programs and UTRGV’s first game against an FBS opponent.

The Vaqueros enter at 1-0 after opening their second season of football with a dominant 44-0 victory over UT Permian Basin. UTRGV piled up 675 yards of total offense, the most in the FCS during the opening week, while shutting out a UTPB team that entered the season ranked No. 18 in two Division II polls. After going 9-3 during its inaugural 2025 campaign, UTRGV now gets an opportunity to measure itself against an FBS program.

UTSA will be making its 2026 season debut as Jeff Traylor begins his seventh season leading the Roadrunners. UTSA finished 6-7 last season after making its sixth consecutive bowl appearance, and the Roadrunners have built a significant home-field advantage under Traylor, going 33-5 at the Alamodome since he took over in 2020. Saturday also brings an interesting connection between the programs, as UTRGV head coach Travis Bush served as UTSA’s offensive coordinator during the Roadrunners’ inaugural campaign in 2011.
