Watch: What Sean Ono Lennon and Brother Julian Lennon Inherited From Dad John Lennon
Sean Ono Lennon is clearing up some long-held rumors.
After a social media user alleged that his late dad John Lennon left “most of the estate” to him instead of dividing it equally with his other son Julian Lennon, Sean—whose mom is Yoko Ono—clarified the truth.
“One guy abandoned by his famous Dad, the other embraced and closely attended to by the same Dad,” the user alleged. “One guy inherited most of the estate, the other largely cut out and forced to engaged in decadeslong litigation in pursuit of a comparatively small share of it.”
But Sean set the record straight, writing back on X Oct. 11, “Julian and I inherited the same amount from our dad.”
The musician added, “Our trusts were equal. Although his was slightly more, but negligibly so.”
Since The Beatlesmember’s death in 1980, fans have speculated that an alleged estate dispute had also created tension between Sean and Julian, whose mom is John’s first wife Cynthia Lennon.
However, Sean recently spent his 51st birthday with Julian, writing on X Oct. 10 alongside a picture of them together, “Had a great bday with my brother.”
E! News has reached out to Julian for comment but hasn’t heard back.
In addition to investing in his relationship with his half-brother, Sean has worked to preserve his dad’s impact on culture. In fact, last year, he shared that he has “technically” become the “custodian” of John’s legacy now that Yoko is in her 90s.

“The world is also the custodian of his legacy, I would say,” he told CBS Sunday Morning in December. “The music is timeless and it speaks for itself. I’m just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn’t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko.”
Plus, the Oscar winner noted, “The Beatles’ music and John and Yoko’s legacy is something important for the world to cherish and be reminded of.”
As for what Sean believes is the most important part of their legacy? He emphasized it starts with their “peace and love.”
“My parents gave me so much,” he shared. “It’s the least I can do to try and support their legacy in my lifetime. I feel like I owe it to them. It’s a personal thing.”
John and Cynthia met as teenagers and tied the knot in 1962. They welcomed Julian—their only child—in 1963 before Cynthia filed for divorce in 1968 amid his affair with Yoko.
John and Yoko married the next year in 1969 and welcomed Sean in 1975.
Their marriage ended when John tragically died in 1980. For more details on the singer’s death and lasting legacy, read on.
