Phillips suffered a “sudden cardiac arrest” Saturday, Sept. 5, before he was set to perform during the halftime show, according to a post by Phillips’ family on his Instagram account. He was taken to a nearby hospital, but his family shared the heartbreaking details sharing with fans that “the damage to his brain was too severe, and we have made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support.”
The Hawkeyes Marching Band will be honoring Phillips in the upcoming games, the band shared on social media on Sept. 10. Phillips’ leader position of the H1 squad will remain empty and Kinnick Stadium will have a moment of silence in honor of Phillips before kickoff. Additionally, the Hawkeye Marching Band will perform the routine that Phillips created during Halftime as well as altering their “Rainbow Connection” drill to spell out his name.

Lastly, the band and staff will wear black ribbons and add to the “Alma Mater Iowa” song “each Hawkeyes carries on, thy spirit in his heart,” in rememberance of Phillips.
