The success of the Houston Cougars basketball program in terms of recruiting continues to stay at one of the highest levels in the country.
Coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff have turned Houston into arguably the most consistent program in college basketball, and the Cougars have been able to draw some of the best talent out there from the high school level.
Houston’s recruiting came under the spotlight in 2025 when it secured three five-star prospects, with Kingston Flemings and Chris Cenac Jr. ending up as first-round picks in the 2026 NBA Draft.
The Cougars added the No. 1 overall center in back-to-back recruiting cycles with Cenac and now freshman Arafan Diane in the class of 2026.
Houston has quickly put together a strong 2027 recruiting class just through the early part of September. Four-star power forward/center Derek Daniels just committed to Houston on Monday, first reported by Joe Tipton of On3.
This was another big get for the Cougars, who now have three four-star commits. They are also all top-65 players overall in the class per 247Sports Composite. Daniels is the latest, who committed just three days after his official visit to Houston on Sept. 4.
Daniels, also known as Beau Daniels, is listed at 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds and is ranked the No. 9 center in the country according to 247Sports Composite. He’s listed as a power forward on On3 and the No. 8-ranked player at his position.
Either way, this is another top-10 candidate at their position that Houston has recruited for this cycle. Point guard Darrell Davis is ranked the No. 6 floor general in the country per 247Sports, while combo guard Oneal Delancy is also 10th overall.
Daniels went to Iowa United Prep, which is the same place that Diane went to as well. Daniels also previously attended Montverde Academy in Florida, where Delancy was as well. The two former teammates are now on the same team again.
While some might consider Daniels a bit undersized for a big man, his play style and build are a great fit for Houston. Daniels is considered a great defender who is strong and physical. He has the potential to be an incredible defensive player at Houston who can work on his rebounding.
His wingspan at 7-foot-2 and athleticism match those of previous big men in Houston’s program. While Daniels can be effective in the paint, his offense as a whole certainly needs some work. Daniels was offered by multiple other Power Four programs such as Auburn, Ohio State, Maryland, Oklahoma State and West Virginia.
Houston was the last team to offer him on July 23, and it was another successful Labor Day recruit visit for the Cougars.
UH now has two guards and a PF/C for the 2027 class that is now ranked No. 1 overall in the country according to 247 Sports. Houston is placed just ahead of Iowa State and Purdue. That speaks to the kind of talent Houston has already acquired.
