The New York Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009.

That’s an incredibly long time for an organization that’s won 27 championships.
In fact, it’s tied for the second-longest title drought in franchise history.
Hal Steinbrenner took over as Yankees owner in 2008. His father, George, took a step back from day-to-day operations and passed away in 2010.
George Steinbrenner devoted his time and energy to make sure the Yankees were winners, but it doesn’t feel like Hal has the same passion, writes Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer.
“For Steinbrenner’s part, it might be hard to put a price on the relief he would feel at no longer owning the Yankees,” Rymer wrote. “He tends to talk about running them as if it’s some grand burden, specifically in the sense that he often pines for a lower payroll. As it is, it’s been a long time since the Yankees were annual leaders in payroll.”

Each offseason, Steinbrenner addresses the media to pinpoint what went wrong with the previous season. He’s had to do that a bunch over the past decade.
For Yankees fans, anything but a World Series is a letdown. Does Steinbrenner feel the same way?

“I’m laying on the sarcasm because it honestly is a tragedy what MLB’s 27-time World Series champions have been reduced to,” Rymer added. “They should be a center of gravity, not a spot on the map. If Steinbrenner doesn’t want to fix this, there’s no shame in selling to someone who does.”

There’s no indication that Steinbrenner is considering selling the team.
But if New York’s championship drought continues, many will continue to question if Steinbrenner is the right person to have in charge of a storied organization.
