Watch: Gayle King Details Catching Her Ex-Husband William Bumpus Having an Affair With Her Friend
Gayle King is happy to let bygones be bygones.
The CBS anchor reacted to her ex-husband William Bumpus apologizing, again, for the affair he had with a family friend in the 1990s after Gayle discussed the infidelity during her recent appearance on Call Her Daddy.
“I was surprised that you guys got him,” Gayle told TMZ, the outlet that received the statement from William, on May 28. “A, that you found him, that’s number one. And B, that he was even talking. Because he never talks. So, I was surprised, but I can also say I appreciated what he had to say.”
Indeed, William—who was married to Gayle, now 71, for 11 years before their 1993 divorce—shared a lengthy statement expressing his regret over his infidelity, marking the second time in a decade he’s apologized publicly.
Noting that Gayle “has every right to share what was a painful chapter,” William told TMZ he remains “endlessly grateful” to his ex-wife for giving him “two of the greatest gifts” of his life, their children, 40-year-old daughter Kirby Bumpus and 39-year-old son William Bumpus Jr.
“It was Gayle who encouraged and supported me through getting my Yale Law degree,” William added. “And it was Gayle who chose, with me, to co-parent successfully from the very beginning—a testament to our shared commitment to our children above all else, and now our grandchildren. The love and camaraderie we forged in that work have carried us all these years.”
He said the pair “remain in a good place” and he even expressed gratitude to Gayle for supporting his teenaged daughter, Poet.

And while William, who said he’s a “private person by nature,” admitted he struggled with the public aspect of her life during their union, it was “no reflection on her true talent and abilities. I am proud to have had a front-row seat to Gayle’s remarkable success, and I remain a genuine admirer and fan.”
Gayle, for her part, affirmed that she and William have long buried the hatchet.
“This happened so long ago that we have both healed, we’ve both moved on,” she told TMZ. “And the reason why I can talk about so candidly, to be honest with you, is because it has been so much time that has passed. And I’m in a really great place, and so is he.”

And candid she was when detailing the moment she walked in on William and their friend having an affair in her home while in conversation with Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper.
But while Gayle admitted she hadn’t planned on rehashing that period of her life, she’s been touched by the response its generated in the time since the interview went life.
“What has really gotten to me is the reaction from other women—that’s the thing that has touched me more than anything,” she said. “I want them to know: It’s a very big club, none of us want to be in it, but the beauty is you can go through it and you can come out the other side. And you can really be okay.”
