Former Auburn baseball star Ike Irish was enjoying an incredible season at the Single-A level of Major League Baseball. However, his season took an unfortunate turn this week.
Irish, who is a part of the Baltimore Orioles‘ High-A affiliate, the Frederick Keys, has been diagnosed with a torn left meniscus and will likely miss the rest of the season, according to a report by Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner. According to Kostka, the injury occurred during the Keys’ game against the Rome Emperors on Wednesday when Irish slid into second base.

Irish posted quality numbers during his first full season as a professional player in the Orioles’ organization. Before his injury, Irish was hitting .286 with 16 home runs, 59 RBI, and 20 stolen bases in 290 at-bats. He earned an invite to the MLB Futures Game in Philadelphia earlier this month after logging 10 home runs and 43 RBI before the MLB All-Star Break, and returned from the break to record 14 hits and 10 RBI over five games. His best game post-break happened July 19 against Greenville, when he hit two home runs and logged six RBI.
The former first-round pick is the Orioles’ No. 2 prospect according to MLB.com and will work to recover quickly from the setback in hopes of bouncing back and continuing to climb up the ranks in the Orioles’ organization.
