The Federal Ministry of Works has fully shut the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, for emergency maintenance and rehabilitation.
The ministry closed the bridge on Monday September 7, 2026. The rehabilitation work is expected to last until September 21.
According to the ministry, the intervention became necessary because of the deteriorated condition of the bridge’s carriageway and damage to some components caused by vandalism, including parts of the expansion-joint steelwork and stanchion and steel-truss nuts and bolts.
It added that the works will include the removal of the deteriorated asphalt surface and laying of a new approximately 40mm asphalt wearing course, alongside other maintenance and safety works.
