The University of North Carolina’s investigation into its football program has officially concluded. The inquiry capped one of the most turbulent stretches of head coach Bill Belichick’s tenure with the program, during which general manager Michael Lombardi and Belichick’s son, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, both resigned from their positions.
While the investigation has now reached its conclusion, the university’s limited disclosure of its findings has left plenty of questions surrounding the program.

UNC announced the findings of its investigation on Thursday. In a statement, the university said the investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct.
Nate Huff, an outside attorney hired by UNC to conduct the investigation, did not provide specific details about the findings or identify what particular misconduct had been substantiated.
However, Huff revealed that his team would not prepare a written report detailing the investigation’s conclusions.
Huff explained that the employment status of those involved was not a factor in deciding whether a written report would be produced.

Nevertheless, the limited information released by UNC has fueled considerable speculation and frustration among fans who want greater transparency regarding what the investigation uncovered.

“Unless a law has been broken, there doesn’t seem to be any requirement to report internal problems at NC. If Belichick’s son has a problem, they may have deemed it falls under FERPA and is private. Otherwise, reporting is discretionary, apparently,” a fan pointed out.

Lombardi and Steve Belichick were the only two individuals who resigned from their positions, but UNC has not publicly provided an explicit explanation for either departure.
The investigation covered a broad range of issues and reportedly examined allegations and questions involving sexual relationships between female staff members and players, as well as potential drug use within the football program.

Huff said he and his investigative team made extensive use of their access to university employees and individuals connected to the football program. He also revealed that investigators conducted more than 60 interviews throughout the course of the inquiry.
However, for now, Bill Belichick’s position with the program remains secure. The veteran coach signed a five-year contract worth $50 million, with the first three years guaranteed.
