After the Atlanta Falcons‘ disappointing Week 1 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the fanbase has been concerned about the quarterback position after Cooper Rush started last Sunday. With Falcons star Michael Penix Jr. returning to practice, as he’s still recovering from a partially torn ACL in Week 1 of last season, he would speak about the possibility of coming back on Sunday in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers.

According to Marc Raimondi of ESPN, Penix would say that playing on Sunday is “still a possibility.” Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Penix would emphasize how “close” he is to returning to the field.
“I know I’ve been saying that, but there’s just a couple of technical things that I want to hit, some goals that I have that I want to achieve before I do stuff out on that field. But I do feel really good, and we’re taking strides each and every day,” Penix said, via the team’s website.

With Tagovailoa continuing to deal with an oblique injury and Rush throwing for 143 yards to go along with a touchdown and two interceptions, Penix would for sure be in contention as the starter, though there are “some goals” he wants to hit.

“I’m going to keep those to myself and the training staff, but I’m close,” Penix continued. “Like I said, I’m close. I’m working extremely hard. I want to be out there. I’m dying to be out there. But at the same time, I’ve got to think about how I feel and think about things that I need to work on to make sure, you know, I hit before I go out there onto that football field.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen if Penix will be ready for Week 2 or if it’ll take more time.
