Former San Francisco 49ers third-round pick Trey Sermon has a new home with the Atlanta Falcons according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Sermon, the No. 88 overall pick in the 2021 draft, will be playing for his fifth team in six seasons if he’s able to carve out a role in Atlanta’s backfield.

The 49ers held onto Sermon for only one season where he posted a career-high 167 rushing yards and one touchdown on 41 carries across nine games. He played in two games the following year for Philadelphia, and then had a two-year stint with the Indianapolis Colts where he appeared in 31 games and rushed for 319 yards and two touchdowns. Last season Sermon played in four games for the Pittsburgh Steelers and only saw action on one offensive snap. The rest of his contributions came on special teams.
Sermon is one of the posterchildren for the 49ers’ failed attempts at drafting running backs. He was followed up by third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price who also flamed out of San Francisco before his rookie contract was up. The 49ers are hopeful third time will be the charm for them with RBs in the third round. They used a 2026 third-round pick on Indiana running back Kaelon Black.
The Falcons bring Sermon into a backfield that already features another former 49er, Brian Robinson, backing up starter Bijan Robinson. With players like Nathan Carter, Tyler Goodson and Cash Jones also on the 90-man roster, there’s a chance Sermon winds up making the 53-man roster if he proves to be a valuable special teams player.
Sermon has played in 46 games with five starts in his NFL career. He has 134 carries for 505 yards and three touchdowns, along with 22 catches for 138 yards.
