Florida football’s new head coach, Jon Sumrall, isn’t budging on expectations for his team this fall, despite a complete roster overhaul, new systems on offense and defense, and a 4-8 record a year ago. The former Tulane head coach remains confident about the Gators turning it around in 2026.
So, what will define success for the program? As national buzz around the team has increased this offseason, with CBS Sports picking the Gators to finish the campaign bowl eligible and ESPN suggesting a college football playoff run is a realistic goal this season.

Sumrall made it clear during a spring media tour that he doesn’t see 2026 as a rebuilding year.
“I’ve got expectations to win every game we play,” the head coach told Action Sports Jacksonville.
However, success won’t be defined only by where Florida finishes in the win-loss column, but also by the mentality and direction established inside the building during his first season in Gainesville. He wants to establish an identity in his first year, a character that reflects the legacy and status of the Orange and Blue.
At the very least, Florida must noticeably close the SEC gap.
“Our expectation is for our guys to expect to win every freaking time we take the field,” Sumrall went on to say. Foundation is a word used around Gator Nation to summarize this season — this groundwork will be crucial in the program’s journey towards reaffirming its SEC cache.
