And the award for most priceless Emmys 2026 audience reaction goes to…Allison Janney.
The Diplomat actress appeared utterly shocked upon hearing her name called during the Sept. 14 ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. (See every star on the Emmys red carpet here.)
Janney took home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, beating out fellow nominees Taylor Dearden (The Pitt), Fiona Dourif (The Pitt), Katherine LaNasa (The Pitt), Sepideh Moafi (The Pitt), Julianne Nicholson (Paradise) and Karolina Wydra (Pluribus) for the honor.
And The Help alum’s astonished facial reaction immediately after the win—her eighth Emmy to date—perfectly illustrated just how unprepared she was to take the stage.
“This is not what I planned for this category at all,” the 66-year-old said during her acceptance speech. “I’m very surprised and very, very grateful to be here.”
Of course, Janney thanked the Television Academy before giving The Diplomat‘s cast and crew some love.
“I have to thank Debora Cahn who is our writer,” she added. “So much fun. And Alex Graves, our director, who I adore, and Janice Williams, and the coolest woman on the planet, Keri Russell, who leads us all every day.”
Janney concluded, “The entire cast is divine. I am so grateful and so lucky. And I thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.”

After tonight’s win, Janney is tied with Jean Smart, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for most acting wins ever in the history of the Emmys with eight each.
Backstage, the star was nearly brought to tears over her shocking win.
“I’m going to start crying because I really didn’t expect this today,” Janney told the TV Academy. “I’m so lucky to be where I am right now and to be standing here.”

And, while walking the red carpet pre-show, Janney joked to E! about reuniting with fellow West Wing alum Bradley Whitford for The Diplomat. While she loves working with her longtime friend, she has some boundaries for how far she’ll go in their new roles as onscreen spouses.
“I said, Debora, do not write any bedroom scenes, please,” Janney said during Live from E!: 2026 Emmys. “She did write one. We were in a fight, and we got into bed and just curled up, snuggled. But you know, that’s about as far as I want to go with that.”
