    Watch: Elmo Sends Shockingly Sweet Message to Rocco for Earth Day

    Elmo is rocking to a new beat this Earth Day. 

    After years of feuding with his best friend Zoe’s pet rock, the aptly named Rocco, Sesame Street’s red monster briefly put a pause on the bad blood by sending Rocco a sweet message as he and Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender star GordonCormier celebrated Earth Day.

    “This Earth Day, you can all be Avatars,” Gordon began in an April 22 YouTube video, “by celebrating and appreciating the Earth. This means being kind to every single thing.”

    Elmo added that included being kind to “the wind and pretty flowers and plants and animals and insects,” and even yourself. 

    But Gordon almost took it a step too far when he brought out Rocco, noting that being nice to everything on Earth would also include rocks. 

    “Gordon, can Elmo borrow Rocco,” Elmo quipped. “Elmo would like to be the Last Pebble Skipper.”

    However, once Gordon pointed out that rocks help make mountains, riverbeds and roads, Elmo decided it might be time to change his tune, begrudgingly wishing the tiny piece of nature, “Happy Earth Day, Rocco.”

    Elmo’s beef with Rocco has been a mainstay of Sesame Street for over two decades, although their one-sided feud didn’t make headlines until 2022 when a clip from a 2004 episode went viral.

    In the video, the perpetual 3-and-a-half-year-old shared his disbelief after Zoe told him he could not eat an oatmeal raisin cookie as she was saving it for Rocco. 

    “How? How is Rocco going to eat that cookie, Zoe? Tell Elmo,” an exasperated Elmo asked. “Rocco doesn’t even have a mouth. Rocco is just a rock. Rocco is not alive.”

    Even Taylor Swift got pulled into Elmo and Rocco’s feud when her February music video for “Opalite” included a girl whose best friend is a rock. 

    “Ms. Taylor Swift,” Elmo wrote on X at the time. “You have got to be kidding Elmo.”

    Luckily, while Elmo might still have issues with Rocco, he and Zoe have been able to maintain their friendship. 

    “Don’t worry everybody! Elmo and Zoe practiced sharing and are still best buds forever!” Elmo tweeted in 2022. “Elmo loves you Zoe! Ha ha ha!”

    “Elmo doesn’t want to talk about Rocco,” he continued, adding in another post “Has anybody ever seen a rock eat a cookie? Elmo is just curious.”
