Watch: Elizabeth Smart Turns Heads While Competing in Milestone Bodybuilding Show
Elizabeth Smart knows her journey is worth the weight.
Nearly five months after the activist revealed she’s now a bodybuilder, Smart shared the results of her latest competitive event.
“Another show for the books,” she captioned her Sept. 5 Instagram video of herself posing onstage while sporting a blue bikini. “Had such a blast. I’ve always said, ‘just stepping on stage is a win for me!’ And I completely stand by that.”
The 38-year-old—who has been an advocate for trauma survivors after her 2002 kidnapping and monthslong disappearance—went on to share the results of her recent show.
“I competed in two classes: ‘Masters 35+,’ which requires you to be 35 or older, and ‘Open Class D,’ which is height-based,” she explained. “I placed at the bottom of both classes.”
But despite the outcome, Smart remains focused on the road ahead and the silver linings.
“Regardless of where I placed, I loved the whole experience,” Smart—who is mom to three kids with husband Matthew Gilmour—added, “had an amazing coach (@slcrobynmaher), got to step onstage with my best friend (@mpholsombake), and had the best support squad in the audience I could ask for.”
In fact, Smart noted that she brought her A-game in more ways than one.
“I brought a better physique and stage presence than at my previous shows,” she concluded, “and I’m so proud of myself for the hard work, discipline, and bravery it takes me to compete. So, here’s to pursuing goals and not giving up!”
Smart previously shared the advice she’s received since debuting her bodybuilding journey in April, noting how her process has helped her grow.

“It’s lifting heavy, it’s prioritizing protein, and then for me, it was really important to have a coach that was there to help me,” she told E! News in July. “Having honest feedback and motivation, but at the same time being like, ‘Hey, I notice that this week’s check-in it kind of looks like maybe you had a hard week or you slid back a little bit. Tell me what’s going on. Let’s see if we can work through this and come back better next week.’”
As Smart explained, “All of those things have helped make a difference.”
Indeed, most importantly, Smart is also “just constantly reminding myself that I can do hard things.”
