Makai Lemon’s first NFL game was not exactly the introduction the Philadelphia Eagles envisioned when they selected him in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The rookie wide receiver caught three passes for minus-5 yards on four targets in Philadelphia’s 24-22 Week 1 victory over Washington.
The Eagles still walked away with the win, but Lemon’s debut landed him in an extremely unusual—and unwanted—place in NFL history.

According to the statistic shared by Underdog, Lemon’s minus-5 receiving yards were the fewest ever recorded by a first-round wide receiver in his NFL debut.
That is a remarkable statistic considering how many first-round receivers have entered the league over the years with enormous expectations. Lemon is also reportedly just the second first-round wide receiver ever to finish his NFL debut with negative receiving yards, joining former New York Giants first-round pick Kadarius Toney.

Toney had a similarly strange introduction to the NFL, finishing his 2021 debut with negative receiving yardage. Lemon’s -5 yards now represent the lowest total in the category.
Of course, one game should not define Lemon’s career.

There were some legitimate reasons for optimism entering the season. Lemon won the Biletnikoff Award at USC and entered Philadelphia with significant expectations, but a hamstring injury cost him valuable offseason and training-camp reps. The Eagles still gave him 29 offensive snaps Sunday, showing they clearly want him involved.

The bigger problem may have been how Philadelphia used him.
Two of Lemon’s four targets came at or behind the line of scrimmage, and his longest target traveled only eight yards downfield. The Eagles repeatedly tried to get the rookie the ball on short screens and quick throws, but Washington’s defense consistently shut those plays down.
That is something the Eagles will need to address.
Lemon’s NFL career is obviously only one game old, and there is no reason to panic yet. But after a debut that placed him alongside Toney in a category no first-round receiver wants to be part of, Philadelphia needs to find a better way to showcase what made Lemon a first-round talent in the first place.
