In his rookie season, Dylan Harper proved that he belongs at the highest level of the NBA. As the #2 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, the hype was real for Harper. However, some people questioned his fit with the San Antonio Spurs, especially with De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle already there.

Throughout the 2025-26 season, Harper showed that he can play as a sixth man. He shone in this role in both the regular season and the Playoffs. Unfortunately for Fox, he did have mediocre performances in the postseason, which also led to Harper getting the opportunity to shine.
Fox has faced the brunt of the criticism all summer because he was not at his best in the Playoffs. That was amplified because he was underwhelming, to say the least, in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. On the other hand, Harper was playing extremely well, which should bode well for the future.
At some point, the Spurs will likely choose Harper for the long-term project. He fits like a glove alongside Castle and Victor Wembanyama, but in the meantime, the Spurs are also relying on Fox to help the team compete for a championship.

Due to the differences in their performances, people want Harper to be the starter. However, that kind of rift is not what Harper wants to see between him and Fox because he wants to play alongside the former Sacramento Kings star, and he does not want to undercut him.
“Me and him never had a problem. I’ve never seen a problem playing with two to three ball-handlers on the floor. Everyone last year said that it was not going to work, but I think we exceeded expectations a lot. All I care about is doing what’s best for the team and winning, and he is a big factor in us winning now and in the future,” Harper said in an interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.
Harper has cemented himself as one of the most promising guards in recent history. With how he performed in the Playoffs, there is a chance he could be the go-to scoring option on this Spurs team. It will be difficult to usurp Fox, but in the meantime, he is enjoying being the standout guard off the bench.
