Drake Maye did not have many multi-turnover performances during his breakout second NFL season. Unfortunately for the New England Patriots, an old problem returned against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday night.

Maye committed multiple turnovers for just the fourth time in his regular-season career during New England‘s season opener at Lumen Field. The Patriots quarterback threw an interception intended for Romeo Doubs early in the fourth quarter. Seattle cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett intercepted the deep pass at the Seahawks’ 3-yard line and returned it 30 yards.
It was a crushing end to one of New England’s best opportunities of the second half. The game was tied 10-10 at the time, and the Patriots had driven into Seattle territory before surrendering possession.
Maye later committed his second turnover of the game, joining a short list of difficult performances from his young career.

Maye’s first NFL start showed both his enormous potential and the growing pains that can come with a rookie quarterback.
He completed 20 of 33 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns in New England’s 41-21 loss to Houston. Maye also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble on a strip-sack, giving him three turnovers.
Houston converted four total Patriots giveaways into 17 points. Despite the mistakes, Maye became the first quarterback since 1950 to throw three touchdown passes and lead his team in rushing during his first career start.

Maye nearly produced one of the most memorable victories of his rookie season against Tennessee.

The quarterback extended the final play of regulation for nearly 12 seconds before finding Rhamondre Stevenson for a game-tying touchdown. New England eventually lost 20-17 in overtime, however, and Maye’s turnovers proved costly.
Maye completed 29 of 41 passes for 206 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also lost a fourth-quarter fumble after being strip-sacked. His second interception ended New England’s final possession in overtime.
Sept. 21, 2025, Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Maye completed 28 of 37 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns against Pittsburgh, but one interception and one lost fumble gave him two turnovers.

Those mistakes helped prevent New England from overcoming a larger collection of ball-security problems in a 21-14 loss. The Patriots committed five turnovers as a team, including three lost fumbles.

Wednesday marked Maye’s fourth regular-season game with at least two turnovers. He also had two such performances during New England’s 2025 postseason run. Maye threw one interception and lost two fumbles in the Patriots’ 28-16 divisional-round victory over the Texans. New England survived those mistakes because its defense forced five Houston turnovers.

He then threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in New England’s 29-13 Super Bowl LX loss to Seattle. The Seahawks converted his lost fumble into a touchdown before returning one of the interceptions for another score. Maye dramatically improved his decision-making during the 2025 regular season, throwing 31 touchdown passes against only eight interceptions while leading the Patriots to a 14-3 record.
That progress makes Wednesday’s performance feel more like an uncommon stumble than an established pattern. Still, against the defense that tormented him in the Super Bowl, Maye once again learned how quickly Seattle can punish mistakes.
