Watch: Doja Cat Shares Struggle With Cocaine, Alcohol During Early Career
Doja Cat is sharing insight into her past personal struggles.
The Grammy winner detailed her experience with cocaine and alcohol use, admitting how the substances took a toll on her mental health.
“I’m going to make a disclaimer that I don’t want to make. I have struggled with cocaine—could’ve been like eight years ago,” the 30-year-old said in an Aug. 31 TikTok video. “But I’m well past that, thank God.”
However, Doja (real name Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini) shared she’s still finding her footing when it comes to caring for her mental health.
“Undiagnosed mental illness or uncared for, unaccounted for mental illness paired with social media is an extreme issue that I think a lot of us don’t understand,” she said. “I think that it’s important that we take that into account when we see things on the internet about ourselves that are negative.”
And for the “Say So” singer, it was alcohol that she attributes to making her truly internalize what her critics had to say online, though she noted she was “never an alcoholic.”
“The best example for my experience is using the internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head,” Doja explained in another TikTok video, “which were then brought on by drinking alcohol.”
“I’ve never had a real problem with drugs, except for weed,” she added, “but alcohol is something that I definitely have had a problem with.”
In March, the “Paint the Town” rapper shared a glimpse into her mental health struggles, detailing her “agonizing” experience with borderline personality disorder, a mental health condition that affects the way people feel about themselves and others, per Mayo Clinic.

In addition to her experience with substance abuse, Doja—a biracial woman—also addressed “self-hate allegations” from fans who claimed she wasn’t proud to be a Black woman.
“I think I hated myself since I was—could have been like 8 years old,” she said in a separate TikTok video. “And that was when I moved to my predominantly white neighborhood.”
As for why she felt called to address her personal struggles?
“I just felt like this TikTok was necessary and I need to get this s–t off of my chest,” she said. “Today felt like the right day.”
