Ryan Waldschmidt Walks Off Cubs in Stunning, Injury Scare Filled Comeback
The Chicago Cubs managed to hang four runs on Brandon Pfaadt, who had yet another strong outing, despite not getting the quality start. The Diamondbacks had injury scares in the outfield with Vargas and Carroll colliding before Jordan Lawlar (is he the most injury-cursed Diamondback ever?) took a pitch to the helmet that chipped a piece of the protective headgear off. The Snakes managed no runs and only two hits through 7.2 innings. Then, Gabriel Moreno check-swinged a double that started foul and ended fair to get a rally going. Finally, Ryan Waldschmidt was called upon in the bottom of the ninth to pinch-hit with one on. The rookie outfielder deposited a pitch deep in the left field bleachers to walk off the Cubs, giving Arizona a boost in the Wild Card standings.
Lovullo Gives Jordan Lawlar Update
After Jordan LAwlar took a fastball to the dome on Tuesday and was forced to exit the game, Torey Lovullo provided some much-needed good news after the game. It seems Jordan Lawlar, who appeared to possibly be headed back to the IL under concussion protocol, has avoided such a fate. The young utility prospect needs to find some consistent playing time, free of injury, to complete this season before he has three lost seasons in a row.
