Watch: Dance Moms’ Abby Lee Miller & Cathy Nesbitt-Stein Reveal Their Feud Was Fake All Along
Abby Lee Miller and Cathy Nesbitt-Stein are done dancing around the truth about their friendship.
As in their long-documented Dance Moms feud was largely choreographed for TV.
“We were turned into rivals,” Cathy revealed to E! News during an exclusive interview. “So, it is accurate to say that we weren’t really rivals.”
Indeed, Cathy admitted she felt “pressure to create drama, definitely” while filming the Lifetime reality show, which originally aired from 2011 to 2019.
Plus, as Abby Lee noted, “Cathy was in Ohio, I was in Pennsylvania. I went to certain competitions, she went to completely different competitions. It’s not like every weekend we saw each other. Rarely.”
But when their students did face off in local competitions, that supposed strife took center stage.
As Cathy added, “In the show, we had to become rivals. It got to the point where we were angry at each other at times.”
So, when the two decided to develop their latest reality competition series Hit the 8, they wanted to flip the script on the old narrative.
“Now, with Hit the 8, we’re on the same page,” Cathy shared. “It’s much better.”
In other words, no tears are being saved for their pillows. And that camaraderie, according to Abby Lee, is what sets the new ShortVydz series apart from Dance Moms.

“We’re more positive,” the 61-year-old told E!. “I think that this show is giving so many kids a vehicle and it’s giving us a new life on TV. It’s not cutthroat, we’re not at each other’s throats. We’re not going against each other.”
Instead, Hit the 8 is about empowering young talents to reach for the stars—even if they didn’t land on top of the pyramid.
“They were so grateful, even if we cut them,” Cathy, 67, recounted, “they came up and hugged us. ‘Thank you for giving us this opportunity.’ It was awesome. It was amazing.”
So, which one of the 128 contestants was crowned the ultimate dancefloor champ? Find out when Abby vs. Cathy: Hit the 8 premieres Oct. 27 on ShortVydz.
