    Watch: Crew Girl Cast Reveals the Grueling Training Process for Netflix Show

    The cast of Crew Girl was not doggy paddling through their rowing training. 

    As stars MikuMartineau, SamBraun and KyleClark revealed, preparing to portray rowers on the Netflix series was quite the feat. Especially for Martineau, as she was filming another movie at the same time she was training to play Teagan Tao, her Crew Girl character who gets a fresh start at a prestigious prep school and joins the dysfunctional boys’ crew team.

    “I was doing night shoots all week, but then on the weekend it was my only free time, so I would have to get up to do rowing training on a lake,” the 21-year-old exclusively shared with E! News’ Erin Lim Rhodes during a joint interview with her costars. “But I had such a blast.”

    In fact, despite the intense training, Martineau “had no complaints,” as the workouts meant she got to learn a new sport and spend time on the water. 

    Still, it wasn’t all fun and oars, as the cast was filming in British Columbia during the fall months.

    “There was one day that we did in October,” Braun recalled. “I remember it was really foggy and it was cold ‘cause you’re in your leotards and you’re waiting for the drone to get set.”

    Clark noted that the rain also came in that day, meaning the cast and crew were out on the water on one of the coldest days, with everyone hiding hot packets in their costumes.

    “I had like 15,” Martineau confessed, with Braun adding they also had “blankets in the back of the boat.”

    “I wish people could see maybe a little bit more of the behind the scenes of not just learning how to row, but mixing in rowing with the technicalities of filming it,” Martineau shared. “Because it’s another ball game—making sure everything is done safe and properly and also the use of cameras with the boats. It’s a very technical thing.”

    Plus, she and the rest of her costars wanted to make sure they were “doing our best to portray” rowing correctly.

    “As an athlete growing up, everybody wants their sport being represented correctly,” Martineau said. “But what’s also great about it is that the rowers in our show are also learning how to become great rowers as well.”
