A Coquitlam high school teacher has been suspended for two days after allowing two students to skip another class and hang out in his classroom, then dispensing dating advice to one while describing them as “pretty.”

Kurtis Michael Johnston Raue was teaching in the 2024-25 school year when he allowed the “skipping students” to hang out in his class — as they were described in a consent resolution agreement signed with the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation that was posted online Tuesday. Raue never told the students’ teacher they were in his classroom.

At one point, Raue gave the student dating advice and said the two would “make a good couple.” He also commented on a hickey on the student’s neck and one on their romantic partner’s neck.

When the student complained about never finding a romantic partner, Raue said the student “is pretty and has a natural look.” He also told another student they looked mature for their age.

The district suspended Raue for 21 days without pay in June 2025 and reported the conduct to the commissioner.

Raue agreed his dealings with the students amount to professional misconduct, and the commissioner ordered another two-day suspension. Raue was told to complete a course on reinforcing professional boundaries, which he completed last year, and the suspension will be served in late September.

In another agreement posted Tuesday, a B.C. elementary school teacher was hit with a one-day suspension for causing injury to a “vulnerable” Grade 5 student during the 2025 academic year.

When the student refused to listen to directions, the teacher tipped the student’s chair, causing the student to fall and hit their head on a table. The student became upset and cried.

The teacher didn’t report the injury to administrators, instead asking the principal to come to class and talk to the student. The student reported the injury and how it happened.
