    Watch: Colin Jost Explains the Real Way to Pronounce Wife Scarlett Johansson’s Name

    Colin Jost has a wee update on wife Scarlett Johansson‘s last name.

    The Saturday Night Live comedian—who tied the knot with Johansson in 2020—riffed on an audience member’s question about whether the Black Widow star’s three-syllable moniker is pronounced with a “Joe” or “Yo” while hosting Pop Culture Jeopardy!. 

    “I don’t know, I’ve never met her in person yet,” Jost quipped between fits of laughter, as seen in a July 18 clip of the Netflix show. “So, I want to hear how she says it.”

    But jokes aside, Jost confessed that he does not pronounce his wife’s last name the Danish way.

    “I certainly say Joe-hansson,” Jost admitted, before keeping up with the bit by adding, “I mean, I don’t say it really ever.”

    And after getting through plenty of jokes about not being familiar with Johansson—with whom he shares son Cosmo, 4, and is stepdad to her daughter Rose, 11, with ex Romain Dauriac—Jost did share a bit of knowledge about the Lost in Translation actress’ family heritage.

    “Originally, she’s Danish,” Jost clarified. “Her family is a mix, probably went back and forth between Denmark and Sweden, so it was definitely Yo-hansson originally.”

    In fact, the 44-year-old noted that his own last name is likely pronounced without the soft J sound given his own ancestry.

    “I was probably Yost in Germany, but now that’s all long forgotten,” he explained. “We changed together. All of our ancestors coordinated and said, ‘Let’s get them together.'”

    But Jost had a far simpler answer when the fan asked if he’s friends with Weekend Update co-host Michael Che in real life. As he jokingly put it, “I didn’t say you could have a second question.”

    And it’s far from the first time the writer has come up with punchlines related to Johansson, who he initially met on the 30 Rock set when she hosted SNL for the first time in 2006. After all, Jost—who began dating Johansson in 2017—recalled writing a sketch for his future wife in his 2020 memoir A Very Punchable Face.

    “The only line I remember from the sketch is when Scarlett’s bratty character says, ‘This party is literally worse than the Holocaust.'” Jost penned in his book. “That was my Shakespearean sonnet for the woman I would one day fall in love with.”
