As the NBA’s schedule slowly begins to trickle out, we now know when and where the Cleveland Cavaliers will begin the 2026-27 NBA season.
The NBA is amongst the best leagues in the world at taking advantage of storylines, and what better way to get the season going than a trip to Philadelphia to face the 76ers in LeBron James home debut with his new team?
Per the NBA’s X account, the Cavs will kick off their season on Thursday, October 22nd in Philadelphia on ESPN.
Not only does the LeBron James decision to join the 76ers over the Cavs hang over this game, but the departure of Mike Gansey from the Cavaliers front office, and Dean Wade joining the 76ers will be hot button topics as well.
The Cavs were left off the bill for NBA opening night, despite their appearance in the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals vs the NBA Champion New York Knicks, the team that the 76ers will open their season against on October 20th at Madison Square Garden before heading to Philadelphia vs the 76ers.
While the Cavaliers do know who and where they will be playing to start the season, they are still figuring out who exactly will be suiting up for the team.
The belief is that James Harden will sign back with Cleveland and give the team the opportunity to improve the roster before he signs his new contract. The Cavaliers appear to be among the front-runners for the Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson, as well as the Atlanta Hawks Jonathan Kuminga.
DeMar DeRozan has also been a name linked to the Cavaliers, though he has a hall of fame pedigree, isn’t the most appealing fit on this current Cavaliers roster.
With all the moves the Cavaliers Eastern Conference rivals have made, they need to get their roster in order as soon as they possibly can. Playing teams like the 76ers, the Knicks, and even the Miami Heat have the Cavs looking up at a gauntlet of teams in the Eastern Conference. With the game in Philadelphia on National television, they have a chance to put a stamp on their doubts and show that they aren’t going anywhere.
Now this is just one of the 82 games the Cavs are guaranteed to play in the 2026-27 season, but it is easy to expect fireworks given the history of LeBron and the Cavs, Harden and the 76ers and the obvious coverage national media will give Philly.
