Watch: Why Caitlin Clark’s WNBA Salary Is Sparking Outrage
Caitlin Clark wants WNBA fans to trust the process.
After a seemingly heated sideline confrontation with Indiana Fever Coach Stephanie White during an away game in Portland, Ore., the 24-year-old clarified to reporters on June 1 that the moment between “two people being competitive, two people that really want to win” was overblown by attention from media and fans that “don’t have a clue.”
“Nobody in our staff, in our locker room, thought twice about it. It’s just what all of you want to blow up and make something that is just lost and not in reality,” Clark said in a press conference per AP, adding, “I think a lot of those things happen all the time. I know there’s a camera on me, and that’s how it’s going to be, but there are a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that think they know a lot of things and they’re just blatantly wrong about a lot of things.”
As such, Clark indicated her relationship with White—who supported her throughout her injuries during the 2025 season—remains one she’ll hold dear “for the rest of my life.”
“I ride with Steph, I ride for these girls. Steph has my back more than anybody. As far as we were concerned, the moment died right then. We can’t control the outside narrative,” Clark continued, referencing the online reaction to footage circulating of the exchange. “We can’t control where people choose to take a snippet of an instance in a game or whatever it might be and run with it.”

As for White’s opinion about Clark and their on-the-court relationship?
“We’re both competitive, we’re both stubborn,” White noted of her star point guard. “We’re more alike than different and hopefully we continue to bring the best out of each other.”
